I was never much of an athlete…I was the girl always picked last for teams in gym class and couldn’t even run a mile. Once I hit my twenties, I toyed with exercise periodically but never really made it a lifestyle. I’ve been fortunate to never be overweight, so I didn’t make exercise a priority.
Then I turned 30 and I began to worry about the long term consequences of spending my days at a desk chair and my evenings on the couch. I realized that I had absolutely no muscle tone, even though the scale hadn’t changed and I was still wearing the same size that I always had. On a whim, I picked up a workout dvd from the Dollar Tree in June 2010 and, to my great surprise, discovered that I enjoyed it. Many more dvds followed.
I’ve exercised regularly ever since then. Last spring I did the Couch to 5K program, and I was super proud of myself for completing it…but sadly I didn’t keep it up. And I’ve been a slug for a whole month recently through the holidays and I was sick for awhile.
Last week, I decided it was time to get back into the swing of things. (The thought of wearing a bikini in 1 month definitely provided some motivation!) I decided a good option for right now would be the 30 Day Shred by Jillian Michaels.
I have several of Jillian’s dvds and frankly, this one was never my favorite. I chose it because it is very short (slightly under 30 minutes per workout) and is meant to be a one-month program (hence the title, duh). There are three workouts on the dvd (increasing in intensity), and she recommends doing each workout 5 times a week for 3 weeks.
I’ve done workout 1 four times so far. I was sore after the first time but haven’t had any pain since. I actually don’t find it all that challenging except for two moves: the push-ups (which I have to do girl-style, on my knees) and the jump-ropes which make my calves burn like crazy.
This weekend, I plan on starting up the Couch to 5K program again. My goal is to get up early and do the Jillian dvd before work, then hit the treadmill at night. (Plus I know I can use the treadmill onboard the cruise ship when I go away.) If I complete the 5K and keep it up this time, I’m going to reward myself with some more real workout clothes, since I mainly just use cheap loungewear. If shopping isn’t a motivation for me, nothing will be!
